International Travel Compliance Checklist
MSU’s Office of Export Control and Trade Sanctions (ECTS), IT Information Security, and Global Health, Safety, and Security (GHSS) have collaborated to provide this guidance. MSU faculty and staff traveling internationally for MSU-related business purposes need to follow a series of steps:
- Register your travel in MSU’s Global Travel Registry at least two (2) weeks in advance.
- Only take equipment, materials, data, or software that are critical for MSU-related business. Leave home any unnecessary items. You may not travel internationally with any export-controlled data, software, materials, equipment, or other technologies without prior approval of MSU’s Office of Export Control and Trade Sanctions (ECTS) and an appropriate federal export license or exemption, as needed. Please see the Travel Considerations - What are you taking with you for further information.
- Working on Federally Sponsored research? If you will be traveling internationally to work or collaborate on federally sponsored research, confirm whether this international travel needs to be disclosed to your federal agency sponsor. The federal agencies have new disclosure requirements related to Research Security, and your travel may need to be disclosed to or approved by your federal funding agency. MSU’s Office of Sponsored Programs can assist if you have questions.
- MSU Information Security recommends that individuals working internationally should be provided a MSU managed device with proper security controls (patched, monitored, endpoint encryption, VPN, no local admin rights, etc.) to use for work connecting back to MSU services. Your local IT department can assist with this. For further information please visit MSU’s Research Security website Information Security Practices During Travel.
- Should you conduct Restricted Party Screening? If you plan to collaborate, associate, or do business with a third-party entity or individual during your travels, then you should confirm that the other party is not on any U.S. Government Restricted Entity lists. Email export@msu.edu at least two (2) weeks in advance of your travel and provide the name of the entity/individual(s), and MSU’s Office of ECTS will run screening for you.
The above steps will help you safeguard your information and research. If you have questions, you may reach out to MSU’s Office of ECTS at export@msu.edu or (517) 432-4499.
